Proteus
The ancient prophetic sea god Proteus (aka old man of the sea), in tiger form, emerging from the sea to sleep with his herd of sea lions is depicted in this mythical seascape. Proteus is said to have been made from the first matter of the universe and can take on any form. His namesake, the King Protea flower as his crown seemed a fitting addition.
This painting is dedicated to Charlie Asquith (RIP), the oldest and fiercest seaman that I know and who was also my neighbour and friend.
